Akitaya Japanese Restaurant

The husband and wife team behind Akitaya have done a fantastic job in Ningbo. They serve the freshest sushi in town. The staff speaks English, Japanese, and Chinese, and are immaculately attired in kimonos. The level of service is outstanding - those of you who have experienced Japanese service will feel at home here.

Elegant Japanese decor is prevalent throughout. There are private rooms, floored with tatami bamboo mats where you can sit on cushions, or Western style booths with tables and chairs. Either way, privacy is assured.

Akitaya isn't like the other Japanese restaurants in Ningbo - no "shovel the food down" atmosphere. This is a fine dining establishment.

Mangetsu serves uninspired Japanese food in dull surroundings. The battered menus and stale food make you want to eat anywhere else.

These two Japanese restaurants are centers of gathering for Japanese people in Ningbo. You can hear Japanese spoken at almost every table, and there are Japanese language magazines lying around. The food is served a la carte or all-you-can-eat from the extensive picture menu. Unfortunately, it seems that the raw fish is frozen and thawed before it is served.

This popular little place is ¥138 for all-you-can-eat, as well as all-you-can-drink. ¥128 if you call ahead and reserve by telephone. Not bad, but Akitaya is better food.

A Japanese fast food franchise that serves a decent bowl of ramen at a cheap price. The Tian Yi Square location is often crowded, but the lines move fast. Good for a quick meal. Multilingual picture menu.
