News I heard from local TV and paper media ,No.1 Subway will  start to be built since 2009,current the protocol and application  for national related departments has been appointed and make the final bid and constructure plan from 2009,the predictable finish duration last to 2014/2015.The connection direction of No.1 subway is across west suburb to east district of Ningbo city.

Till that time ,Ningbo city will join high-developed array of the city owning subways in big China ,the dream of well-traffic and continuous-economy development seem to come true for our ningbonese as well ,following the Hangzhou Bay Bridge opening ,the status of Ningbo in whole China turns to more obvious and key important in domestic and oversea trade market even others domains .

Click on the attachment to see the subway lines (all Chinese).  It seems like the two lines intend to connect the city and the countryside - they don't make travel easier inside the city.  Who needs to go to Zhenhai on line 2?  Yinzhou district is hardly served, as is the ring road.  I believe that property developers might have influenced the subway lines, to increase the value of their land holdings.

Where are the other lines?  Six total?

I think the grey lines on

I think the grey lines on that map are the proposed other lines, they have numbers on them and stops marked.

OK, I see the gray lines

OK, I see the gray lines now.  It's rather scary to see that the part of the city that we call "Ningbo" today - it's only a small area on this new subway system.  I'm afraid that there will be a huge amount of development in the countryside.  I was raised in such an area, and it was a terrible place to grow up.  Everything new, no culture, no reason for being, completely boring.  So sad, Ningbo is such a nice little city now.

what can i add? nothing..

what can i add?

nothing.. Sad..you say what i think..

Ningbo is the quiet version of Shanghai,

i came from a quite little city in Italy, so i feel more "at home" in Ningbo respect to Shanghai. ..anyway is "the development". in italy in the 50s/60s we had something very similar...

I am a native and I know

I am a native and I know ningbonese and shanghainese are very similar in character, the two cities are also very similar in geography. Like or dislike it, ningbo will be as developed as shanghai in a few decades.

Maybe the subway plan seems too "in advance" today, but who could imagine china would grow so fast in the past 30 years?Wink

yes Different from other

yes

Different from other country in the world, China always do something that seems "too big", but they are right because some logistic and transport improvement must be done looking far in the future.

Looking forward?  There

Looking forward?  There will be years of construction and disruption.  Anyone remember when they removed the pedestrian overpass near Tian Yi Square?  Zhongshan Dong Lu was closed for six months, making traffic chaos.  I can only imagine the disruption caused by closing many of Ningbo's major streets for years.

Moreover, the subway will enable monstrous growth, with urban sprawl as a result.  It won't be pretty.

Ooo, good one.  I'll have to save that.

Some of the names are a bit off, though.  Sakura Park?  Not only is sakura a Japanese word, but they tore up all the trees to put the subway station there.

Metro Lines

I agree to Craig´s Posts. The subway in NB is only doing by interests of some people.

There is no real reason to construct a metro in NB. We are not in SH or SZ or BJ! These cities are big cities. They need it.  NB isn´t and don´t need it. I can imagine the metro stops Tianyi SQ for the first wagon when the last wagon is still in Goulou! Haha!

Cheaper and more efficient would have been good new train lines from a separate place in the train station with only some stops and running in a shorttime rythm between the city, Yinzhou, the new area and Ninghai in the south and Beilun/Zenhai in the north + improve seriously buses. Also setup a traffic study commission to find out how to improve traffic flow (it´s possible. Many cities in Europe have done it, why not NB?) This is a good way to find solutions and safe a lot of money that they can use to do a lot of things better in the city and surroundings. But, want they that at all? Maybe too much of the responsibles of the city are involved in this "financial package" called Metro/Subway. It´s not enough to hide yourself only behind the reason of development of the city in order to explain it.

For me it´s clear: if in the next months the current chaotic traffic will increase because of that, and also metrosites dust recovers the city (don´t laugh: have a look at the end of BaizhangDongLu where they cut all the trees and do nothing to protect the rooms along the street from noise and dust...) - I move to a city where the responsibles are more respectfully to their inhabitants and ensure them better  life standards than only following financial interests...!

But the example of the Sakura Park makes me be very pessimistic...

about trees

i did not follow the work of baizhang lu, but i know about the standard rules for work in ningbo (and i guess china)

all the tress must be removed, cutting form the roots. and put in another side

on the old ningbo-beilun they made a big work to remove almost all the trees and recover them other side (i think also my company got some of them)

so sure now everything will become a big mess (to make an undergound you need make holes..no way)

but wait the end of the work, probably they only keep one entrance outside and put again all the trees (or almost all).

so wait some years and see..

for industrial building (example) you must add tress each "some" square meters of building you do.

about the real utility of the tube:the number of cars in Ningbo is going to be fucking crazy, so sure this will help reduce it.probalby before do the tube the city governemnet shboudl think other solutions as suggested by you, but i not tnhink this tube will be a wrong choiche..moreover china is the country where is possible made a motorway..destroy it and rermake only to keep people working.

and in this bad 2009 for world economy may be they also made this thinking
