Hi! I'll be moving to Ningbo this winter and I'd like some information about the following:
1. What's the weather like and what kind of clothes should I bring? e.g. How cold does it get in January ?
2. I've got a cat. How difficult is it to bring her over? She has all the necessary vaccinations. Do house renters have any objections to cats?
3. Is there and airport nearer than Shanghai? And how can I get to Beijing with the least hassle? (I'll have to go there a couple of times a month)
4. Is the traffic as bad as in Beijing? Will it be worth buying a little motorcycle or electric bicycle? Or can you move around by bus without spending all day on it?
I hope someone can help with this. Thanks in advance.
1.WEather well last january it was ok about 10 degress clothes well what size are you if you china man size dont worry ,if big and fat like me i would bring some coats etc
febuary march snowstorms and it was fun 0 degrees
2.your cat no idea but they eat dogs here so be carefull you might lose it if some one hungrey.
i never seen a cat since i been here but people keep dogs so i suppose it ok .in china pay money and your landlord will be happy.
3.Dude check a map fly into hong kong and then fly direct into ningbo 1.5 hours or shanghi to ningbo were you coming from anyway.
4.traffic well its pretty tame bus is good taxis are great cost you 9 rmb to go anywere around city.
Depends what you want to do cost you 2000 rmb upwards for electric bike and you better man than me to ride it around town.
Anyway hope this helped
It has helped a lot! Great, thanks for taking the time to reply. Some of the info. was surprising. Snowstorms???!! I was told the climate was "subtropical" and very mild all year. I'm flying from Spain, probably. I live here. I didn't realise there was an airport at Ningbo. That's good news. I rode a bike in Beijing so it doesn't sound like Ningbo is worse than that. But those taxi prices would put me off going to the effort. Beijing taxis are far more expensive than that (still cheaper than Europe, of course). Thanks again for replying. I'll probably be posting more questions as the time approaches.
p.s. The old question...are there really dogs hanging up in the markets? In Ninbo itself? In Beijing you could find a few dog restaurants if you knew how to read Chinese but not common and no carcasses in the markets.
Hello Jacklong,
They have dog in the winter. Its not good to eat it here in the summer as summer is too hot and you may get nosebleeds.
Bringing your cat over is fine. I know Reindeer Station can help with your pets. Its a big hassel as you have to get a lot of paperwork filled out in Shanghai if you do it yourself. You need to go all over.

You didn't think Ningbo had an airport?!? WTF man...and the whole "dogs in the markets" thing...are you sure you lived in China before? Only newcomers obsess about such ridiculous things. I've been here some years now, and I've never seen a dog hanging in a shop. Hopefully that reassures you.
Administrator, www.NingboGuide.com.
i must say i never seen dog hanging in market ,closest i got was a small dog i patted at a factory i was buying some goods from.Thought the factory was good as they had this nice little dog sitting out side on a lead.Found out they were making him fat for a feast 60 days later .He was a nice little dog !!!! cost them 8rmb at market!!!!
so you coming to ningbo to work ??

You will find most answers you need here

Like Craig said, not really on topic and hardly worth noting but... Posturepaal is correct...everyone knows(except the Koreans) that eating dog in Summer is bad for you. Medical science may contradict that, but what do they know anyway.
FYI I have never seen dog meat on sale or dog dishes on the menu in any place downtown. There are neighborhood "farmer's markets" within a mile or two of downtown where I have seen dogs, and dog meat for sale during Winter.
Ningbo weather is cold/wet in the winter and hot/humid in the summer. there's a couple months each fall and spring that are pretty nice
"I've been here some years now, and I've never seen a dog hanging in a shop."
Maybe not in Ningbo, but in Canton, where I lived before, this is not so uncommon.
Even in the supermarket you could find quite large parts of dogs:
In a few shops you could actually watch dogs being slaughtered (I was always late for the fun, though). Here, in the background there is one such shop. If you look carefully you can see a dog hanging there (where the women are laughing). In the cages in the foreground are goats & chickens.
Dear Craig,
I'm rather disappointed that you're the administrator on this site. And surprised. It seemed an excellent site until I read your comments. If you'd been anyone else I'd just have ignored your rude remarks. Especially as so many other people have been kind enough to send me really useful information. Let me clarify a couple of things. Firstly. I've only begun to research this city. When I was told, very recently, about the move, I was (wrongly, as it turns out) told I'd have to fly to Shanghai. Perhaps it's a question of the airlines my company deals with, but I presumed it was because it was the nearest airport. A simple mistake and hardly worth swearing about. I travel a lot but I certainly don't know all the airports in all the countries I have to go to. Secondly, I am in no way "obsessed" (it's an adjective, by the way, not a verb) about the dog-meat issue. I have been in China before, ( I didn't say I'd lived there - only that I'd been in Beijing. Actually it's a city I know quite well from frequent visits rather than residency) so it's not news to me. However, I have friends and family planning to visit me shortly after arrival. Some of them have stronger feelings and reactions about this issue and personally, I prefer to respect other opinions rather than considering them "ridiculous" or in some way inferior to mine, as you appear to do, so I wanted to ask people who live there about this question of the local markets, so I could be prepared and also pass on the info. to my potential visitors. Pretty logical, no? After all, what you read in the press/internet in Europe often bears little resemblance to life as it is in China, in my experience so far.
Thirdly..of course I'm a newcomer. Isn't that the topic of the forum? "New to Ningbo"? You seem to imply this is some sort of stigma. How odd.
As I said, it's disappointing to receive this from the administrator of what seems an excellent forum in a good website. It's rather strange that you should consider yourself so superior you can decide what's "ridiculous" and what's not about the information that people require when they are moving home. An example : presumably, lots of people would consider it silly to bring a cat to China, especially given the bureaucratic difficulties involved, but no-one was rude enough to say this. Or perhaps they are wise enough to realise we are not all in a position to choose everything we do or need to know. Finally, it was correct local information I required, not reassurance. Thank you very much to all the people who have made the effort to give me this information, without sarcasm or rudeness. I appreciate it very much.
Jack
